RUNNING:
THE CAMPAIGN
FOR CITY COUNCIL

RELEASED JANUARY 18th 2001 I 76 MIN

The 2001 campaigns for the NY City Council were the most significant local races in decades for two reasons: term limits law deemed 36 Council incumbents ineligible for reelection, and reform of the city’s campaign finance laws increased public funds available to candidates. This combination of factors made it possible for many candidates with local grassroots support to make a credible run for office for the first time. Running: The Campaign for City Council, is a one-hour program that tracks the progress of candidates in three diverse New York city districts as they vie for Council seats. The 2001 election cycle produced the greatest turnover in the Council’s history. And the 2001 campaign season was the most exciting in decades – a rip-roaring, cacophonous display of democracy at the local level.
